Join us for wine and cheese with Lisa Brackmann (Hour of the Rat ) & Timothy Hallinan (THE FEAR ARTIST, LITTLE ELVISES AND CRASHED)

Lisa B BooksLisa Brackman’s new novel, Hour of the Rat is bound to make a lot of waves in the mystery field. It is a marvelous modernization on the hardboiled genre and you’ll be able to read my full review. I was hooked when I read Getaway last June and gave it a Five Star review where I praised her for telling the story in gritty prose, using all the black keys to set a noirish mood across the bright, sunny beaches of Vallarta.

In Brackmann’s , Hour of the Rat, she revisits Iraq War vet Ellie McEnroe, from Rock Paper Tiger  who now has a pretty good life in Beijing, representing the work of controversial dissident Chinese artist Zhang Jianli, even though Zhang’s mysterious disappearance has her in the sights of the Chinese authorities. Then an old Army buddy’s brother disappears and Ellie agrees to try to find him. At worst, she figures she’ll have a few days of fun, but Ellie soon realizes that she’s stumbled into a dangerous conspiracy that may or may not involve a sinister biotech company, eco-terrorists, and an art-obsessed Chinese billionaire - one that will take her on a wild chase through some of China’s most beautiful places.

Timothy Hallinan will be discussing and signing his fifth Poke Rafferty thriller novel, The Fear Artist (Poke Rafferty) , (starred reviews from three different publishing trades). I reviewed
the book back last August and was absolutely blown away. Tim has taken the thriller into the realm of literature. Here’s what I had to say back then; “Hallinan not only writes a relentless-as-the-rain paced thriller, sprinkled with an off beat, cynical humor, but the poignant emotional sides of the characters and the intelligent and beautiful plot and story telling soak the reader’s heart to the skin.”

Now married to the former “queen” of the Patpong bars, Rose, with whom he's adopted a daughter off the sidewalks, Miaow, Rafferty has found family life quite an adventure after moving to Bangkok. But after an accidental collision with a man who dies in his arms, he is on the run from the police and secret service who want to know what the man said to him before he died. It soon becomes apparent that he's been caught on the margins of the war on terror, and that his opponent is a virtuoso artist whose medium is fear.

Two of the most exciting thriller writers working today, Lisa Brackmann and Tim Hallinan never disappoint. If you are within driving distance on June 22 of San Diego, you’ll want to attend one or both of these events.

July 10th Tickets on Sale! Daniel Bennett CD Release at Metropolitan Room in Manhattan!

clockhead goes to camp daniel bennett

Daniel Bennett, the marvelously original sax/flute/clarinet player, whose album Peace & Stability Among Bears  we reviewed in November, 2011 is set to release a new CD, Clockhead Goes to Camp  on Wednesday, July 10th. The release party will be in the Metropolitan Room in Manhattan. Daniel Bennett, along with his group breath a fresh air into jazz drawing inspiration from folk music and then presenting it in a minimalist ensemble that, despite the avoidance of excess, still manages to explore complex musical ideas and themes. The result is a marvelously hypnotic musical trip that will speak to the jazz enthusiast as well as the casual listener.  I haven’t heard the new album yet, but knowing Bennett’s knack for writing irresistible hooks on the alto, flute or clarinet, which are also daring musically in the use of polyphony and complex drum rhythms and interplay with the other pieces,  it’s bound to be a fun piece of work. Get your tickets early, and if you can’t attend in person, well pick up the CD for a treat.
