Imagine if Aerosmith got married to Queen. If the child survived growing up, it might be a slightly manic,egotistical, extrovert to say the least. You might expect them to be full of glamour and emotion.You might expect attitude, you might expect them to be full of grandiose gestures. You would expect them to rouse the rabble with the best of them.
They would definitely be over the top in the energy department. And of course you would expect star quality.You might even expect them to found a church... The Church of Rock and Roll
Well that's exactly what you get with these hard rocking “prog rock meets glam pop”, Cincinnati, OH. band. Oh … with a trumpet.
The album opens with the title track. It's a kind of bombastic gospel sermon beseeching us to live a life outside of the walls of the mundane. Way outside. It speaks of a time when rock stars were mythical creature. As Eric Nally, the lead singer, with a voice equal parts Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant, says, “ Now there's no mystique , but I like the element of mystery and longing. The rock star is becoming extinct. I want to revive it.”
The second track on the album,is also the lead single, “I Like It”. It's a salacious sex strut straight out of the 70s. You almost expect platform soles and bare chests.It’s a declaration of the appreciation of the lewd and lascivious. But not pornographic, just sexy.
Track 3, “Holly Touch”, tones it down a little. Think,the band Heart singing “Magic Man”. Eric Nally really channels Freddy Mercury on the highs. But just when you think these guys are all about that in yer’ face hard rock gallop, they lay a heart wrenching, tender ballad like “Forever Together” on you. A tune to make you stop and listen if you possess a heart that has loved.
Really of the 11 tracks Included here there's not a weak song among them. Having cut their teeth on three previous albums. In 2008, the band was named one of the "100 Bands You Need to Know" by J. Stalin, writing for Alternative Press. They’ve toured with bands such as the Strokes, the Fall of Troy, Hole, and Portugal. The band is Eric Nally on astounding, soaring vocals, Loren Turner has got the stadium guitar licks covered, Daisy lays down the solid bass lines , Sky White plays piano with a beautiful touch for any genre, Aaron McVeigh completes the rhythm section on drums and Alex Nauth is out front on horns, which is unusual, yet very tasty, for a band like this. It's a unique caliber musicianship not found in many bands you here in world of modern radio. And it’s very well produced and engineered for the recently revamped I.R.S. records, a division of EMI who provided this review copy.
They are an electrifying band. Whether covering Prog rock, Glam rock, Pop balladry, Hard Rock Or just about any other category you want in the pop world today, They are poised to fulfill the glorious potential they have displayed over the past eight years and three albums. Give ‘em a listen.
